I never really considered myself a dreamer until I went out and saw the "real" world - the true meaning of poverty in the streets of New Delhi; embodied devotion in the temples of Kathmandu, the simplicity of joy and belonging in the sesame fields 9 hours away from the city; a potent stew of appropriated healing customs in the Coromandel hills of New Zealand. I was 18, away from home for the first time, and dreaming of a safe space for at risk youth to explore and express themselves creatively, living the life of an artist, educator, and community organizer. Actually, I'm still dreaming the same dream, just I'm really living the artist part. Back then, voices around were quick to snuff that light out. Nowadays I celebrate that starry eyed me - because she was on to something, even if it took 10 years to find my way back to her. xx, rya
